Governor Obiano Flags Off 2021 Wet Season Farming.
Governor Willie Obiano performed the function at Dr Alex Ekwueme Square, Awka.
The event which has the theme EMPOWERING THE YOUTHS IN AGRICULTURE FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT witnessed agric fair, launching of the compendium, handing over of Tractors to farmers, and displaying of produce from different LGA
Speaking during the event, Governor Obiano who said that the it will be his last flag off of farming season, pointed out that his administration has succeeded in putting measures in place for sustainable agriculture in the state.
The Governor described the flag off as his last parting gift to Anambra farmers, urging them to make it remarkable, saying that three things which are important in agriculture are its suitablilty to the people, its ability to protect environment and offer economic opportunities, all of which his administration has always promoted.
Governor Obiano who said that the newly built Anambra International and Cargo Airport will help boast the agricultural export activities in the state.
While stating that the trust of his government is to pay attention to yield per hectare, because Anambra don’t have enough lands, noting that in view of the global economic realities, he feels justified to making agriculture his number one pillar, calling on more ndi Anambra to venture into agriculture.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Agriculture, Alhaji Sabo Nanono, said that Anambra has been known for exportation of some Agricultural crops and Anambra rice which has gained National acceptance.
The Minister who was represented by the State Director FMARD, Comrade Arthur Mbuba emphasized that the Federal Government is striving hard to encourage raining season farming across the country in order to eradicate hunger and improve our Gross Domestic product.
Earlier, the Commissioner for Agriculture, Mr. Nnamdi Onukwuba explained that one thousand youths from three senatorial zones of the state will be engaged in rice production in the over 1177 hectares of land developed at Ndikelionwu in Orumba South under the CBN loan scheme, expected to increase overall rice production from 440000 metric tonnes in 2020 to 525000 metric tonnes in 2021.
While thanking the Governor for his drive in agriculture, he said that their are two fish villages under construction in Adazi Nnukwu and Aguleri with total of 600 ponds, which will further engage 600 youths when completed, saying that the projection is to expand production of horticultural crops, tomatoes, onions, cucumber, ginger and other vegetables to enable Anambra state become self sufficient, in food for its citizens and for export.
The Commissioner said that the Ministry have keyed into the World Bank Assisted Livestock productivity and resilience support project which through the project has boosted Livestock productivity and expanded production of “Efi Igbo”, Piggery and Aquaculture as alternative sources of protein.
Notable also is the revolution on rice farming and distribution in the state, with various rice farms and mills springing up, A typical example is the COSCHARIS RICE which is one of the best quality of rice and having one of the biggest rice mill and storage facility. With such progress Anambra is ready to take over the business of agriculture.
There was distribution of agro input, inorganic fertilisers cassava stem bundles, certified rice seeds, okro and tomato seeds, animal feed for sheep and goats. Etc.
During interaction with the farmers, they appreciated the governor for the provision of different agric loans, seedlings, and other essentials to their members which have encouraged them to achieve more. They however appealed for more of such support as to them all the farmers in Anambra are determined to increase their yield so long as government continue to support them.
The event also witnessed the presence of government officials including members of the state Executive Council,
Anambra State House of Assembly members, led by the Speaker, Right Honourable Uche Okafor,
Transition Committee Chairmen,
farmers, representatives of schools, and patronisers, among others.
The development strides of Chief Dr Willie Obiano in different strategic aspects of government is admirable and for us a the Solution Magazine, we hope to identify and publicize these wonderful achievements as he winds up.
